Medical billing and coding is expected to be among the top ten fastest-growing professions in the field of health over the next twelve years. It is a good-paying job with a regular forty-hour week and annual salaries range from $31,000 to $40,000. Medical billers/ coders work in a variety of settings like doctors' offices, hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient centers.

Medical coding is all about making and maintaining records whenever people receive health care. This includes making records of medical observations, results of tests, diagnoses, interventions like surgery, outcomes, etc. Medical billers/ coders enter appropriate codes into computer records and keep track of bills and payments. These jobs require high accuracy and proper training and usually an associate degree.

Nowadays, a number of colleges are offering online medical billing and coding certification programs. Anybody who has access to computers can enroll in the program and take online medical coding classes. The online certification programs have some advantages over regular courses. A student can work from the privacy of his/her own home. The cost of the online course is usually less than the same regular course at a college or institution. There are not as many classroom interruptions and single parents or a working person with a full-time job can easily complete the program. The duration of the program may differ from 6 months to 1 year as specified by the college. The coursework includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, coding data, legal aspects of health information, statistics, computer science, database management, quality improvement methods, and so forth. After finishing the course, a student can choose to do an externship in a medical facility to gain practical experience in becoming a certified medical biller/ coder.
