CCTV Security Systems

A closed circuit television (CCTV) system is a type of video surveillance system that can provide security for a wide range of businesses. A CCTV system makes use of security video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific, limited set of monitors. The main difference between a CCTV system and the broadcast television is that in CCTV system, the signal is not openly transmitted. A CCTV video security system is most commonly used for surveillance in those areas which need a very high level of security, such as banks, airports, military installations, etc.

A CCTV video security system may comprise of a single spy camera and a monitor or a complex video surveillance system with hundreds of security cameras, digital security recorders, security DVRs, remote viewing cameras and multiple operators. Designing a security system with a CCTV cameras requires detailed knowledge of the hardware. You can make the most basic CCTV video surveillance setup with the help of a single camera connected directly to a monitor and a recorder. Though this setup could help security in some cases, it is not enough for most businesses. Most of the installations demand multiple cameras, even a moveable camera in some cases to cover a large area.

While CCTV systems help in providing security, they can also be used for safety purpose. For example, a CCTV system can be installed at those places where a machine operator cannot directly observe people. In a subway train, an operator can use CCTV system to confirm that people are clear of doors before closing the doors. A CCTV camera can also be used to safely reverse a vehicle.

With the increasing use of CCTV systems at public places, the debate over public security versus privacy has also started. Some people oppose it because of loss of privacy of the people under surveillance and the negative impact of surveillance on civil liberties. People argue that these systems cannot reduce the crime, but just displace it.
